Well, what can I say. Blogs rock. Seriously, people just think of blogging as a "chat room" or some kind of conversation going on between people. But there is alot more than that going on...A blog basically IS a website, they really aren't any different, but it's a website with a CMS (content management system) that if you had customized, would cost you thousand of dollars to do. Believe me, I know, I create CMS's all the time! Not all CMSs are created equally...but as far as a blog, it basically lets you manage the content of what is on the site from a form based website that auto updates what you enter.
A Blog can be setup yes, like a conversation peice or a chronological diary of sorts, and traditionally, that is how they have been used. But BLOG CUSTOMIZATION is the new thing.
Basically, now with the help of a graphic designer and someone who is somewhat of a blog guru, you can set up customized blogs, that can replace your website and your web host...This is definately NOT for all businesses. But for many small businesses who want to drive their own website content on a regular basis, this is a GREAT solution...
Recently, I created a Website using a blog for the Bolton Community Music School. I created the graphic, and the site layout and created actual "pages" then end, and then another part of the site is designed to ongoing content that will be updated and chronologically based.
The school did know how to develop a website, and didn't want to tackle it themselves, but yet, they wanted to be able to drive the content. So this was a great solution for them.
Another client came to me wanting to produce a website. I spoke to her about it and again she really wanted to hire me to also drive the content and update the site for her. Since she is a one person business a representative for a bigger company, I advised her to do a Website using a Customized Blog.
Again, driving the content was really important to her, being able to update her customers on a regular basis with new information and something that would support and improve her customer service to clients.
So, if you have a business and really want to be actively involved in your web content, a blog website might be right for you.
Or if you have a website and want to add a blog as an extra feature or service to your customers, it might be right for you.
